Syllabus & Exam Pattern — What to Study

The CBT consists of multiple parts — the technical section (post-specific), language (Punjabi) and general aptitude/knowledge. Below are suggested topics and a study plan to help you prepare effectively:

Technical / Trade Section (Post-specific)

  • Basic electrical engineering concepts: circuits, Ohm’s law, power, single-phase and three-phase systems.
  • Wiring standards, earthing, fuses, transformers, switchgear and protection devices.
  • Overhead lines, line conductors, poles and hardware, safety practices while working on live equipment.
  • Tools of the trade, meter reading, testing instruments (multimeter, megger) and maintenance practices.
  • Practical troubleshooting and fault identification in power distribution systems.

Punjabi Language

  • Reading comprehension and grammar in Punjabi.
  • Basic composition and sentence correction.
  • Everyday vocabulary and official correspondence style in Punjabi.

General Awareness & Reasoning / Quantitative Aptitude

  • Current affairs (national & state level) — last 6 to 12 months.
  • Basic arithmetic: percentage, average, ratio, proportion, time & work, simple interest, profit & loss.
  • Logical reasoning: series, patterns, coding-decoding, seating arrangement, blood relations.
Preparation tip: Allocate most study time to the technical section (50 questions). Practice previous year papers (if available) and take mock tests under timed conditions to build speed and accuracy.

How to Prepare — 8-Week Plan (Suggested)

Here’s a focused 8-week study plan to help you prepare for the PSTCL CBT while balancing work or studies:

  1. Week 1–2: Revise basic electrical concepts, single-phase & three-phase systems, wiring practices and safety. Build strong fundamentals.
  2. Week 3–4: Practice trade-specific problems and hands-on troubleshooting scenarios. Solve practical MCQs and short problems.
  3. Week 5: Start Punjabi language practice — reading comprehension, grammar exercises and short writing practice.
  4. Week 6: General awareness revision (current affairs), and quantitative aptitude basics. Take short quizzes daily.
  5. Week 7: Full-length mock tests under exam conditions. Analyse mistakes and revise weak areas.
  6. Week 8: Final revision: short notes, formulas, and quick Punjabi revision. Focus on accuracy and time management.

Make a habit of attempting daily quizzes and set aside 60–90 minutes for technical practice on alternate days. Practical familiarity with electrical tools and systems will be an advantage during interviews and document verification stages.
